Performing masterpieces of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Mahler as well as commissioned works inspired by human rights, the orchestra has attracted prominent soloists and enthusiastic audiences to support humanitarian and social projects around the world. The Human Rights Orchestra: Conducted by Alessio Allegrini, the Human Rights Orchestra is an ever-expanding community of musicians who support humanitarian and social projects with fundraising concerts. Gathering mostly from across Europe for an intense three days of rehearsals, the orchestra presents programs ranging from masterpieces of the repertoire to commissioned works inspired by human rights issues, events, and champions. Concerts have featured both young artists and world-renown soloists including Maria João Pires, Isabelle Faust, Ilya Gringolts, Teo Gheorghiu, Imogen Cooper, Rachel Harnisch, RafaŁ Blechacz, and Hélène Grimaud. Through the generosity of concert sponsors, ticket income is donated to local and international organizations supporting marginalized people: to date, 20 organizations in 15 countries. Representatives of the beneficiary organizations are invited to address their supporters—the orchestra and the audience—who benefit from receiving a personal connection to the purposes, activities, and outcomes of the social projects.

IMAGINE, JOHN LENNON

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people
Livin' for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too

Imagine all the people
Livin' life in peace

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

From Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific
lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein

You've got to be taught to hate and fear
You've got to be taught from year to year
It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
And people whose skin is a different shade
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught before it's too late
Before you are six or seven or eight
To hate all the people your relatives hate
You've got to be carefully taught
You've got to be carefully taught
